Changes in the regional classes of car insurance

aRegional classes car insurance

Once again this year, there are numerous changes to regional classes of car insurance. Regional class, like type class, is a car insurance rate characteristic. From the regional class depends therefore not least also, how much one must pay for its Kfz insurance. A low regional class has a decreasing effect on the insurance premium, while a high regional class makes the insurance premium increase.

annual recalculation of the regional classes

The regional classes are intended to reflect the claims record of the 413 registration districts in Germany. Every year, the regional classes are recalculated based on the current damage statistics from the German Insurance Association (GDV). This recalculation has again resulted in numerous changes in regional classes of car insurance. About every fifth registration district in Germany has been classified in a different regional class. Separate regional classes are charged for each of the following: automobile liability insurance, partial coverage insurance and comprehensive insurance. While the scale for motor vehicle liability ranges from 1 (lowest class) to 12 (highest class), the partial cover has 16 regional classes. For comprehensive insurance, there are only nine classes.

Changes in the regional classes of the motor vehicle liability

4.8 million motorists have slipped into a higher regional class for motor vehicle liability insurance. In contrast, 4.5 million motorists in Germany have reason to rejoice. You have now been placed in a lower regional class. This year, the Prignitz region in Brandenburg had the best claims record in Germany for motor vehicle liability insurance. As a reward for all car owners there is the regional class 1. The worst damage record was in the German capital Berlin. This results in the expensive regional class 12.

Changes to hull insurance regional classes

In comprehensive insurance, 3.4 million fully and partially comprehensive policyholders were placed in a lower regional class. On the other hand, 3.2 million policyholders have slipped into a higher regional class for their comprehensive insurance.

When it comes to regional classes for comprehensive insurance, a clear north-south divide can be discerned. In the north of the republic in the registration district Brake the damage balance turned out best. This results in regional class 1. In contrast, the south of the republic, with the Garmisch-Partenkirchen registration district, has the worst claims record. Here the vehicle owners must live in the future with regional class 9.

Drivers from Bamberg had the best claims record for partial coverage insurance and can therefore look forward to regional class 1. In the Ostallgau registration district, the damage balance is almost four times as high. This results in the expensive regional class 14.

High regional classes in most major cities

In general, the trend can be seen that the high regional classes can be found especially in parts of Bavaria and in major German cities. No less than five major German cities with more than 300.000 inhabitants were assigned the highest regional class in motor liability insurance. In addition to the German capital Berlin, these were also Munich, Nuremberg, Essen and the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. Munster in North Rhine-Westphalia is the only major city in Germany that has been assigned a regional class lower than 5.
